Cost of Department. As the survey office forms part of the Public Works Department and is accommodated in the same building, which is known as the Government Offices, there are numerous charges, such as those for lighting, heating, electric fras, &c., which cannot be stated. Omitting charges of such

Trigonometrical Work.
As no survey of the Colony
had been made since that carried out by Lieut. Collinson in 1845 (his plan contains many inaccuracies), it was decided in 1908 that a proper Ordnance Map should be built up on correct triangulation and this work was commenced early in 1909. The staff then consisted of six surveyors, exclusive of the Princi- pal Land Surveyor, three of whom had been appointed during the two previous years. The necessity for this considerable in- orease and further additions subsequently made was partly due to difficulties and delays which had occurred in procuring qualified men and to sickness among the staff which caused the
